Brisbane’s dry winter, roughly May to September, is the calmest, clearest stretch of the year, and from Hampton Court Apartments in Clayfield it is the easiest season to enjoy Ascot. This guide covers four things: what the weather does, what is on, how we spend the dry days, and what to book ahead.

What does Brisbane’s winter weather actually do?

Brisbane’s dry winter is mild rather than cold. July, our coldest month, averages about 21 degrees by day and dips to around 9 in the early morning. It is also the driest stretch of the year: July brings roughly 34 millimetres of rain across about seven days, against the 150-plus millimetres of a humid February. The humidity falls away, the sky clears, and afternoons settle into comfortable shirtsleeve weather. Mornings and evenings genuinely cool down, so keep a jacket handy for an early walk. Days run shorter too, with sunrise around 6.30am and darkness soon after 5pm, so it pays to put the outdoor plans in the middle of the day. It is worth checking the current Brisbane forecast on the Bureau of Meteorology before you travel, but through winter the odds are firmly on clear.

What is on around Ascot in winter?

Ascot is racing country, and winter is its season. The Brisbane Racing Club runs the Winter Racing Carnival across seven Saturdays at Eagle Farm and Doomben, both about a five-minute drive from our front door. In 2026 the carnival ran from 2 May to 27 June, and its centrepiece, the Stradbroke Handicap, Queensland’s richest race at three million dollars, jumped at Eagle Farm on Saturday 13 June. The Group 1 Doomben 10,000 in mid-May is the traditional lead-up and worth catching if your stay lands earlier in the season. Even outside the marquee Saturdays, midweek meetings tick over through the cooler months, so there is usually something on at the track. Come August, the Ekka, the Royal Queensland Show, fills the Brisbane Showgrounds five minutes away for ten days of showbags, woodchopping and fireworks. Between the two, the racing precinct on our doorstep is at its liveliest from May through August.

How do we spend the dry days from Hampton Court?

The clear, mild days are made for being outside, and most of what we point guests toward is within a short walk or drive. Oriel Park, a five-minute walk from our door, is an easy green loop for a morning coffee lap. The Kedron Brook bikeway, a short drive north, runs flat and shaded for a longer walk or ride. Racecourse Road in Ascot, about a 20-minute walk or six-minute drive, does its best trade in winter, when the footpath tables stay comfortable right through the afternoon. Guests staying with us keep mentioning how walkable the whole area feels once the summer humidity lifts, and winter is exactly when that shows. A day trip works well too, with the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast an hour away via the Gateway Motorway.

What should you book ahead for a winter stay?

Two dates tighten up accommodation right across Brisbane’s inner north: carnival Saturdays and Ekka week. If your trip lands on either, book several weeks out. Winter is also a steady season for families visiting relatives in the northside hospitals and for corporate guests dodging the summer wet, so midweek can fill faster than you would expect. Our self-contained studios, two-bedroom apartments and penthouse suit all three groups, and booking direct through our specials page locks in 5 per cent off with the promo code SAVE5. Every apartment is self-contained with reverse-cycle air conditioning for the cool mornings, and free off-street parking means the car stays put while you walk. Reception can also sort race tickets, restaurant tables and car hire once you arrive.

Winter stay FAQs

Is Brisbane cold in winter?

No, Brisbane winters are mild. July, the coldest month, averages about 21 degrees by day, dropping to around 9 in the early morning. It is the driest stretch of the year too, with clear skies most days. Bring a jacket for mornings and evenings and you will be comfortable through the day.

When is the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival?

The carnival runs across seven Saturdays, from early May to late June, at Eagle Farm and Doomben. In 2026 it ran from 2 May to 27 June, with the Stradbroke Handicap on 13 June. Both courses are about a five-minute drive from Hampton Court Apartments.

Is winter a good time to visit Brisbane?

Yes, winter is one of the best times to visit. The humidity drops, rain is scarce, and days sit in comfortable shirtsleeve weather. It suits walking, outdoor dining, racing and day trips. Accommodation is easier to find than in summer, apart from carnival Saturdays and Ekka week.

Do I need to book early for the Ekka?

Yes. The Ekka, held over ten days each August at the Brisbane Showgrounds five minutes from us, is the busiest week of the winter for inner-north accommodation. If your stay overlaps the show, book several weeks ahead to secure an apartment and the best direct rate.

What should you pack for a Brisbane winter stay?

Layers rather than heavy coats. Days sit around 21 degrees, so a t-shirt handles the middle of the day, while mornings and evenings call for a jumper or light jacket. Add walking shoes for the parks and paths, sunglasses for the clear skies, and something smarter if a raceday is on your list.

Brisbane’s dry winter is the season this pocket of the city runs best, and Clayfield puts you five minutes from the track and a short walk from the coffee. Settle into a self-contained apartment, keep a jacket by the door for the mornings, and let the clear days do the rest. See our current rates on the specials page, or read more about the area on our Clayfield location page.
